A reader’s directory
Find a bookshop in France
Browse 6,636 listings across 2,008 towns and localities. Search by name, town, postcode or subject, then check the source and confirm practical details directly with the bookshop.
Choose a place and a subject
Browse towns or explore regions and departments. Listings and navigation are primarily in French. Useful search words include jeunesse (children’s books), BD (comics), occasion (second-hand) and langues étrangères (foreign languages). A subject mention describes a dated source; it does not guarantee a particular title is in stock.
Prepare your visit or order
Keep the exact address and check the bookshop’s own website when a link is provided. Opening hours, stock, events and accessibility are not tracked in real time. For a book order, provide the author, title, publisher, language, translation and ISBN if available. Ask whether another edition is acceptable, how long the order may take and how you will collect it.
Understand the information
The directory combines public Culture Ministry and Sirene snapshots, plus a small editorial selection. Source dates are shown on individual listings. Administrative activity is not a promise that a shop is open on the day you travel. Missing contact details mean that our sources do not provide them. The coverage page explains these limitations with counts, and the comparison tool displays up to three listings together.
Find the right edition
Our reference tools help you identify a book before asking a bookseller. A bibliographic catalogue confirms a reference, while commercial availability must be checked separately. See the French guides on ordering a foreign-language book, using library catalogues and accessible reading formats.
Contact a bookseller with a clear request
Some listings now include public telephone numbers or email addresses from the ADELC professional directory. The listing identifies that source and its consultation date. The directory does not give an update date for every notice; confirm details directly before making travel plans. A source date for the original listing and a consultation date for contact details describe different observations.
| French | Meaning | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| En stock | In stock | Available at which branch, and can it be reserved? |
| Sur commande | Available to order | Supplier availability, estimated delay and collection point |
| Épuisé | Out of print or unavailable from the publisher | Another edition, second-hand copy or library consultation |
| Texte intégral | Unabridged text | Translation, volume and included notes |
| Retrait en librairie | Collection at the bookshop | Ready-for-collection message, exact shop and holding period |
A request can start with: « Bonjour, je cherche [titre] de [auteur], ISBN [numéro], en [langue]. Pouvez-vous confirmer l’édition, la disponibilité, le prix et les modalités de retrait ? » This asks the shop to confirm the edition, availability, price and collection arrangements.
Check a reference before ordering
Our reader tools, labelled in French, validate an ISBN check digit and prepare a request you can copy. They do not look up a book or send a message. A valid check digit does not prove that a number has been assigned. Compare the publisher, language and format in the catalogue record. For an unavailable older work, Gallica may provide a digitised version, while the CCFr can help locate library holdings. Each institution sets its own access and reuse conditions.
